From the times when sewing was a necessity of life, to the times when it was an essential skill for running a frugal household, sewing has always been with us.

Sewing provides enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment. From sewing, we can learn math, creativity, problem solving, and organizational skills.

Slowly, it seems that sewing is becoming a lost art. This once widely practiced craft is becoming less common knowledge with a younger generation.

It is the desire of Lost Arts to teach a new generation this wonderful and useful skill.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Recommended for 10 and up

This style of hand embroidery is easy to do and beautiful to look at!!

It is simply basic embroidery stitches done with narrow silk ribbons instead of embroidery floss.

We will be making a simple sachet while learning to do the basic stitches.

When you sign up for this class, I will e-mail you the necessary supply list.

This class will consist of 1 session 2 hours long.

Cost of class is $10

There is no class limit.

Jean Purse

Intermediate Level

Supplies Needed:

1 old pair of jeans or a jean skirt (girls sizes work best)

1/2 yard fabric for lining

1 magnetic snap closure

This class will consist of 1 session, 3 hours long

The cost is $15

Yo Yos

All age and skill levels

Yo Yos are gathered circles of fabric that can be used in a variety of ways.

There is no machine sewing in this class. These projects are all done by hand.

Supplies needed:

Fabric – your choice – all one fabric or several.

You can use scraps you have at home or get several “fat quarters”.

Coats and Clark thread in color to match

You will have several choices of what to do with your finished yo yos

Possibilities range from pillows, table runners, or embellishments on placements, purses, tote bags, and for scrapbooking. Depending on what you would like to do, I can tell you if you need more supplies.

This class will consist of 2 sessions, 2 hours each.

The cost is $32.

Flower Power Pillow

Supplies Needed:

One 14” pillow form

1/2 yard fleece

4” x 21” piece of fleece for small flower

4 1/2" x 24” piece of fleece for large flower

One 1 1/8” button

Thread to match

This class will consist of 1 session, 2 hours long.

Cost of class will be $16

All classes are held at Christ Church of Metro Atlanta

Class Size

Class size is limited to a maximum of 6 students.

Signing up for a class

Email me at lostarts1@gmail.com with the class you wish to sign up for and the date you want.

Also, please include the age of your child.

I will confirm your place in the class by return email along with release forms that must be signed and brought to the first class.

Payment

Payment is due when you sign up. I accept cash or checks. You can either mail the payment to me or pay in person.

Refunds

Refunds will be made if you are unable to attend the class due to sickness or family emergency.

No refunds will be made due to lack of proper planning.

If you show up for a class without the necessary supplies, you can either sit through the class or leave.

No refunds will be made in this instance.

Cancellation

If you sign up for a class and there are less than 4 students signed up 1 week in advance of class,
you will be notified and your payment will be refunded.

If for some reason I have to cancel a class you will be notified as soon as possible and either payment will be
refunded or the class rescheduled.

Intermediate Class

This class will focus on the following skills:

Reinforce skills learned in beginning class

Taking measurements and picking the correct size pattern

Reading a pattern envelope

Shortening and lengthening a pattern

Marking and labeling pattern pieces

Edge Finishes

Working with elastic

Making a casing

You will have a choice of making a pair of shorts, a skirt or a pair of pajama pants and a jumper or a sun dress. I will give you patterns to choose from at the first session.

Supplies Needed:

Basic sewing tools (see sewing basics)

Pencil/pen

Notebook

At the first session, we will be learning to take measurements and read a pattern envelope.

The student will go home with a supply list.

This class will consist of 3 sessions.

The first will be 2 hours.

The second and third will be a week later and will be 3 hours each.

The cost is $64

Workshop

This Workshop will be open for anyone.

You pick out the project you want to do. You may have a project you have been working on and you are stuck and need a little help or just want to have a little fellowship while finishing it up!

I will offer all the assistance you need in picking out the appropriate materials you will need, even if you need me to meet you at the store! At the workshop, I will help you to develop the skills needed to complete a professionally finished project.

This will be a “pay-as-you-go” workshop. You only pay for the time you need to be there. In other words, every time there is a workshop scheduled, you can come for the full 3 hours, or just drop in for an hour if you are stuck on something and need a little help or just want to work on a project with friends!

The project you wish to work on does not necessarily have to be a sewing project. Let me know if there is something else you need help with and I’ll let you know if I can help!

The cost for the Workshop is

$8/hr.

Hand Embroidery

Learn the basic stitches used in hand embroidery.

Beginning Class

Ages 8 and up

This class will focus on the foundations of sewing.

Learning basic sewing terms

Knowledge of basic sewing tools

Operating a sewing machine

Learning and identifying parts of a sewing machine

Using a pattern to cut out project pieces

Sewing straight lines/seams

Become familiar with basic sewing terms

Following instructions

Basic hand sewing

We will be making a pillow, a simple purse, and a case for our scissors

Supplies needed:

Not included –

Fabric - medium weight cotton, any color/print you like (for purse) – 1 yd

light weight cotton

for lining - 1 yd

Fabric - cotton, any color/print you like (for pillow)– 3/4 yd

Fiberfill - 1 16oz. bag

Thread - Coats and Clark All Purpose – white or best match for your material.

Plastic shoe box (these are usually available at the Dollar Tree)

Cost of beginning class is $90.

The cost includes beginning sewing kit*, patterns, and materials for scissors case.

Advanced Class

The following classes are for those who have completed the intermediate class.

If you have not taken classes with me before, please check the beginning and the intermediate class pages to see what the necessary skills are to take the following class. If you have those skills, please contact me.

We will be reviewing the skills we have already learned.

The supplies you need will depend on the patterns you pick out. By this point, you should

be able to read the pattern envelope to know what supplies to get. Let me know if you need any help.

These classes will consist of 3 sessions, 3 1/2 hours each.

Cost of the advanced class is $84.

Adult Class

The following classes are recommended for 18 and over.

Exceptions can be made.

OK Ladies -

It’s time to learn to sew!

Many of you have told me that you never learned to sew or haven’t sewn in a very long time.

This class is for you!

If you have never sewn before, then the Beginning Adult class if just what you need.

If you have sewn, but it’s been awhile, then the Intermediate Adult class is for you. If you are not comfortable

with your skills and want to join the Beginning class, that’s fine too!

Beginning Adult Class

The Beginning Adult class will be covering the same skills you can find on the Beginning Sewing page. The projects will be a bit

more challenging, but I know you can do it!

We will be making an apron with pockets, a placemat (you can learn how then make all you need!), and a simple tote bag.

Supplies Needed: Not Included –

PRE-WASH ALL FABRICS!!

For the Apron:

1 3/4 yards cotton or cotton blend fabric

10”x9 1/2” fabric remnant for pockets

1 dishtowel (optional)

Thread to match fabric (Coats and Clark)

For the Placemat:

1 yard fabric of your choice for top

1 yard fabric of your choice for bottom

1 yard fusible fleece

Thread to match fabric (Coats and Clark)

**Keep in mind that you will probably want to wash these, so choose your fabric carefully!

**PLEASE NOTE: This fabric amount will make 6 placemats, 18”x13”. If you only want to make one, look for a fabric remnant or a “fat quarter”.

For the Tote Bag:

1 yard pre-quilted fabric

1 package Wrights Single Fold Bias Tape in contrasting color

This class will consist of 3 sessions, 2 hours each.

Cost of Beginning Adult class is $60.

The cost included beginning sewing kit* and all patterns.

Intermediate Adult Class

Recognizing that not everyone wants to sew for themselves, but would prefer to make items for

their homes, there are 2 intermediate classes offered. Please check the calendar for

the appropriate class.

In this class we will be building on the skills learned in the Beginning Adult class. This will also be a good chance to jog that memory for those of you who have sewn before.

Garment Making –

Please check the Intermediate Sewing page for the skills we will be learning.

You may wish to make a drawstring skirt or pair of pants instead of the pajama pants. You can also make a simple jumper, sundress, or sheath type dress. I can help you find patterns that will include the design elements needed for this class.

Supplies Needed: Not Included -

Basic sewing tools (see sewing basics)

Pencil/pen

Notebook

At the first session, we will be learning to take measurements and read a pattern envelope.

This class will consist of 3 sessions.

Sewing for the Home –

We will be making a casserole carrier, potholders, and a cute little pincushion!

(I know, a pincushion? Bear with me, there are several lessons you will learn while making the pincushion!)

For the Pincushion –

1/8 yard fabric for top and bottom

1/8 yard fabric for side bands

1 yard 1/8” to 3/8” wide ribbon

2 – 3/4" diameter buttons

1 doll maker’s needle

For the Casserole Carrier –

2 placemats that coordinate

24" of ribbon

thread that matches

For the Potholders –

1/4 yard fabric – cotton only – no synthetics – PREWASH FABRICS

This will make 2 potholders

You can also use 1/4 yard twill or denim for the back of the potholder. If using a different material for the top and the back,

you would get 4 potholders from your material.

You can also use “Fat Quarters” – these are found in the quilting section of Joann’s.

Any scraps you have around the house will also work as long as they are 100% cotton and you can get 2 8” squares out of it.

For the filling, you have a couple of choices.

1 – An old cotton bath towel.

2 – 1/4 yard of “Insul-Bright” batting and

1/4 yard of cotton batting (the cotton batting must be prewashed)

This class will consist of 3 sessions, 2 hours each.

The cost is $40.

No-Sew

No-Sew Fleece Blanket

These blankets make up quickly and make great Christmas gifts!

Supplies Needed:

1 1/2 yard of two different fleece patterns (total 3 yards)

This class will consist of 1 session, 2 hours long

Cost of class is $10.

Note that this class is for ages 8-adult.

There is a class limit of 10.

The following items will be needed for every sewing class:

A good attitude and a desire to learn!

**If you are not sure if you will enjoy sewing and do not want to make an investment in a machine, I currently have two machines that
can be rented for the length of the class. They are available on a first come basis. The fee for a 3 session class is $10.

If you are looking for a sewing machine, Wal-Mart currently has two – a Brother, model LS2125i, at $69.00 and a Singer, model 3116, at 99.97. Either one would be a great choice for a beginner. The Singer has a few more bells and whistles than the Brother, as is reflected in the price.

You can also find good used machines at Atlanta Sewing Center on Pleasant Hill Road, next to Joann’s. Check out Craigslist, or garage sales. We bought one for my daughter several years ago at a flea market for $35 and found out that it was only “slightly used”.

About Me

I am a Christian wife and mother. I have 4 children, 21-27. Yep, I’m an empty nester!

It’s a weird, sad, and wonderful time of life! Yes, I said sad. I loved having my children at home! We are, however, expecting our first grandchild in September! We couldn't be more excited!

I was a stay-at-home mom for 26 years.

As priorities have changed in my life, needs have also changed – a.k.a. college tuition!

(One graduate from UGA and three at Georgia Tech make for very interesting family gatherings!)

After much prayer, I believe that God is leading me in a new direction.

I have been sewing for 36 years. I have been a crafty person since childhood.

My interests have been diverse and have included such crafts as sewing, hand embroidery, quilting, jewelry making, paper crafts, painting, photography, home decorating, and the latest, machine embroidery. Simply put, I love to craft!
I have sold my creations at craft fairs throughout the years and by word of mouth for the past several years. Currently I am venturing into the world of online selling, opening my Etsy shop in the next few weeks.

I began playing the flute as a 5^th grader and played continuously throughout my school years.
I taught beginning students while I was in high school
and directed a middle school orchestra at a church
for 2 years. Playing gives me so much satisfaction and I look forward to sharing that!

God has been very gracious to me! He has blessed me in so many ways, from family, friends, a wonderful church and many creative talents.

It is my prayer that this business will, first and foremost, glorify God.

Secondly, I pray that I would be able to pass on my love of sewing and music to a whole new generation.

I am looking forward to this new adventure that God is taking me on!
